Optus Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Perth, Western Australia, located in the suburb of Burswood. It was completed in late 2017 and officially opened on 28 January 2018. The stadium has a capacity of 60,000 seats and is home to the West Coast Eagles of the Australian Football League (AFL), Perth Scorchers of the Big Bash League, and the Western Force of Rugby Union.
History and Timeline
The stadium was originally built to host the now-defunct Western Reds Rugby League team in the 1990s. However, the team folded before the stadium was completed. The project was then put on hold until it was revived in 2007.
The site was previously occupied by the Burswood Dome, which was demolished in 2015, and Burswood Entertainment Complex, which remains adjacent to the stadium. Construction of Optus Stadium commenced in late 2016 and was completed in late 2017.
The first event held at Optus Stadium was an AFL pre-season game between the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers on 10 February 2018. The first regular season AFL game at the stadium was held between the same two teams on 25 March 2018.
In 2019, Optus Stadium hosted its first ever NRL game when the South Sydney Rabbitohs played against the New Zealand Warriors in Round 3 of the season.
In 2020, the stadium was one of the venues for the AFL Women’s competition.
